History Of The College

       This College was inaugurated by the then Commissioner of Puducherry, Shri.S.K.Datta in July, 1961. It was started as a pre-university with a strength of 106 students. In 1962, B.A. Economics, B.A. French, B.Sc. Mathematics and B.Sc. Botany programmes were introduced.  This College was upgraded to offer Post Graduate programmes in 1965.

        Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the new campus in 1963 in commemoration of the Birth Centenary of our patron Sri. Rabindranath Tagore.

        This college was offering both Under Graduate and Post Graduate programmes till 1989. A new Post Graduate Centre was established from Tagore Government Arts and Science College to offer Post Graduate programmes exclusively in 1989. Tagore Government Arts and Science College is affiliated to Pondicherry Central University since 1985. Tagore Government Arts and Science College is recognized by the University Grants Commission from 1968 under Section 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act of 1956.

       Tagore Government Arts and Science College has a beautiful and green campus of 15 acres situated in an urban setting well connected all localities of Puducherry. This college has a well laid out play ground, a canteen and other infrastructural facilities.

      Tagore Government Arts   and ScienceCollege   is a co-education college. Girl students constitute almost half of the total strength. There are seventeen teaching departments covering almost all disciplines in Arts, Science, Commerce and Management. There are seventeen Under Graduate programmes leading to B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., and B.B.A. degrees. Tagore Government Arts and Science College is one the very few colleges in India offering French as an optional language to the students along with English, Tamil and Hindi.

       Tagore Government Arts and Science College has 103 faculty members at present with the sanctioned strength of 135 faculty positions. This college has a healthy faculty: student ratio of 16:1. Of the 103 faculty, 55 have Ph.D. and 45 have M.Phil. degrees. Thirty are Associate Professors and seventy three are Assistant Professors.

       There are separate blocks of buildings for the teaching departments such as Physics Block, Science Block accommodating departments of Botany, Zoology and Chemistry and Mathematics and Computer Science Block. There is a well fitted Auditorium for organizing seminars and conferences and another big auditorium to conduct end semester examinations. Every department is equipped with all necessary instruments and teaching aids such as laboratory equipments, multimedia projectors, computers etc. As all the infrastructural facilities are adequately available, Tagore Government Arts and Science College is preparing to start PG and Research programmes in the near future.

       The fifty six year old library of this college is the biggest college library in the Union Territory of Puducherry having 97000 volumes of books covering every facet of knowledge. The library has its own two storey building. Computerized operations and services have already been started in the library. NLIST facility from INFLIBNET is available and all the faculty and students are encouraged utilize this facility. This library possesses hundreds of vernacular language books which are not found anywhere else in the country. Many scholars from other research institutions and regions visit this library to make use of these resources.

       The best outgoing students are selected and awarded with a gold medal every year at the annual day function.

      There are two NSS units functioning in this college. Several outreach programmes such as weeklong community service camps, medical camps, blood donation camps, plantation of saplings, etc., are organized to serve the rural areas around the college.

      This college has all the three NCC wings, viz., Army, Navy and the Air Wing. This is a rare privilege not found in many other colleges. Hundreds of students from these NCC units are actively participating in regional and national camps and bring laurel to the college.

       Every year literary and cultural competitions are organized during the cultural celebrations called Fetê de TAC. During this weeklong celebration this college wears a festive look.

      A majority of students of Tagore Government Arts and Science College are first generation learners. They belong to socially and economically weaker sections of society and are hailing from neighbouring rural areas. This college is very conscious that these require special attention. Therefore Tagore Government Arts and Science College takes great effort in providing them with not only academic knowledge but also social skills to enable them to excel in their chosen fields of career. Thus, Tagore Government Arts and Science College takes pride in discharging its social responsibility of moulding a wholesome personality of these poor and socially underprivileged students. It would relevant to mention here that this college runs Career Oriented Add-on Courses in “Event Management”, “Functional French” and “Journalism”.
