Tagore Government Arts and Science College , the premier of Higher Education Union Territory of Pondicherry had feather in its cap through the introduction of B.Com Curriculum in the academic year 1968-69. The institution had then been affiliated to the erstwhile University of Madras.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Commerce was started with students strength of 30 and with staff of 2 Assistant professors. In successive academic years, required number of Lecturers were inducted into service. Towards the year 1972-73 the Department became a full fledged one. Students had been achieving academic excellence and career success right from its inception. The Pondicherry University came into existence in the year 1985-86 and threrafter the college was affiliated to the Pondicherry University .

The year 1986-87 was also a milestone in the history of the Department of Commerce with the starting of Post Graduate Course in Commerce(M.Com) with student strength of 20. in 1989-90, the Government of Pondicherry siphoned out all Post Graduate Courses from the various colleges of the Union territory of Pondicherry by starting a center for Post Graduate Studies. Since then, the Development of Commerce, Tagore Government Arts and Science College offers only B.Com Degree course like any other discipline.

Subject like Income Tax, Entrepreneurial Development, Insurance, Auditing, Advertising and Salesmanship were included in the syllabus so as to provide a professional touch to the course. Principles of Accountancy is taught as optional subject in B.Sc(Computer Science) and as allied subject for B.A(Economics) course.

In order to provide Commerce education to rural students, an Annexe of Tagore Government Arts and Science College was constituted in the academic year 1995-96 with an initial students' strength of 30 each, for UG course in Commerce and Co-Operative Management. Consequent to the incorpostion of Society for Arts, Science and Technical Education in the year 2003, the Annexe is now vested to the society.

TEACHING TECHNIQUES

Through intensive classroom teaching and discussions students are motivated to gain more Knowledge. By conducting periodical tests, and model examinations, students are provided with an opportunity to show more progress in their studies. This has resulted in a significant improvement in the university examinations. Periodical Parent-Teacher Meetings have been held to enable parents to know about their wards.

Students belonging to Backward community, S.C and ST have been showing remarkable progress in their academic pursuits in view of the personal touch given to them by the Department.

The system of maintaining Bio-Data each student was introduced by this Department from the academic year 1996-97, which was first of its kind in Tagore Government Arts and Science College . This system facilitated the Department to know the personal background of each student. Parents were contacted whenever felt necessary. Further it helped the department to sponsor the names of the students of various companies which approach for commerce students. BPL, Eureka Forbes, Rane Brake Lining,HCL were some of the companies that approached us for recruitment of commerce graduates.
