By the enthusiastic efforts of Dr. K. Narayanan and Dr. A. Durairangam, the Department of Philosophy was started in the year 1988 offering the Undergraduate Course B.A. Philosophy and Indian Culture. As the work-load in teaching increased with the admission of the second batch students, hourly-paid lecturers have been appointed. Dr. B.R. Shanthakumari, Dr. Saratha, Dr. Venkatalakshmi, Dr. E.J. Manimaran, Dr. James Kurian, and Dr. Sujatha worked in this Department as hourly-paid lecturers for a short period.

The Department of Philosophy started offering the course on B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Cultural Tourism from 1996 - 1997 onwards in place of B.A. Philosophy and Indian Culture. All India tours were conducted for students as study-tour-programmes.

With the introduction of the textual study of Patanjali Yoga Sutra, the title of the course offered as B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Cultural Tourism was then changed into B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Indian Culture from the academic year 2007 - 08. Yoga training was also given to the final year students of this Department.

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced from the academic year 2017 - 2018. The title of the course offered as B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Indian Culture was then changed into B.A. Philosophy from the academic year 2017 - 2018 onwards.

To see the Platonic conception of The Philosopher King a major effort is made with the line of philosophical seriousness. This concept encompasses in-itself everything and is self-explanatory. Also, to see that each and every student of this Department, of this college thrives hard to achieve this end, thereby abiding by the Constitutional Law of this Nation.

Training the students rigorously in logical reasoning and thereby developing their faculty of critical thinking. Nurturing the three aspects of a human being - knowing, willing and feeling aspects - so as to mould them into well integrated human beings. Give them enough exposure to the thoughts of the philosophers (Indian as well as Western) along with the factors (historical, social, cultural, economic, political, etc.) that shape their thoughts and the impact of their thoughts on the society. Train them to approach the matters related to anything, by applying the skills they have acquired, with what was inculcated in them, and by comparing with what different thinkers have got to say on those things. Catering to all the above mentioned, considering the students without any disparity, being rooted strongly in the culture, values and law of this land becomes the abiding concern of the department.

The scope of this UG Degree Programme in Philosophy includes introduction of the studetns to the concept of logic, Critical Thinking, History of Philosophy (Eastern and Western) covering the epistemology, metaphysics, ethics (theoretical and applied), social and political aspects, culture, Values, Yoga and Feminism, Human Rights and Environmental Awareness.
